I wrote Four Things I Have Unlearned for the latest issue of Sluice magazine: Autumn/Winter 2024, Unlearning. Buy it online here, or at a genuinely good bookshop or art gallery shop. You can easily tell which ones are shit, because they won’t have it. I’ve written something for every issue of this magazine since the first one. Sluice magazine is published twice yearly, in late spring and autumn. Each edition has a unique theme but broadly covers visual art and artist-led culture not only in the UK but throughout the world.
“I’ve been in the visual arts for twenty five years, and a writer since I was in my late teens. I never aspired, I just did. Aspiring to be an artist, especially a world-changing, famous artist, is like aspiring to be an astronaut or a princess. Sure, it happens for some people, but there’s probably no more than fifty slots available for Famous Living Artists in the entire world at any given time and it probably won’t be you.”

You can also get a great overview of the magazine’s design and typography, which is by CHK Design. Irrespective of whether I was in it or not, I’d still appreciate the consistency of the aesthetic over many years combined with every issue looking 100% fresh and original. Plus it’s just nice to see your words presented well.
